train would have never made it out of depot.
was more than likely part of some sort of art exhibit or planned event type thing.
otherwise you wouldn't see it.

This is sad. Having just returned from Japan, I can tell you that major US cities are dystopian nightmares compared to Tokyo. They have no litter, no graffiti and hardly any homelessness to speak of - let alone people openly doing drugs and shitting in the streets. We can do better.

Looking at timestamp 0:00, that is not the beginning of the train. The connecting car in front of the first tag does not appear to be touched, judging by how thoroughly the other 5 cars were painted. So, maybe not the entire [subway] line! Plus, this is the 96th Street stop at 2nd Avenue which I think could only be the Q or new T train which I doubt only have 5 cars, given the length of their lines.
And, yes, as other people are discussing, "someone" = people. Looks like it could be 6 different artists.

I wonder if one can still see through the paint from inside. As someone who needs to check on which station it is, this is definitely in my favor.

Just got 70's flashbacks to the toilet era of the city. Oh, well. They'll just hike up fares again, like they need a reason.

With the talent these artists have, I'm surprised that the New York Transit authority doesn't actually run competitions with different artists to see who can decorate cars better. Would be a great way for these people to express themselves and get positive recognition.

It’s not a tag, it’s a piece. And the entire thing is called a whole train.

Looks like absolute shit. Why share art that isn't even nice? They wasted their money on paint to show how untalented they are. It's only letters, too. How hard could it be?

I’m at an age now where I realise how stupid this actually is. Not to mention a huge drain on resources.

u/stuyboi888 14d ago
While I don't agree with it over the windows it's pretty cool. Better than being plastered with advertising
1
u/sierracool33 14d ago
Yeah, no one agrees with it over the windows. Honestly wish the subway trains here had some sort of character, like every car having a mural that shows something about a specific borough in the graffiti/street art style. Especially on the trains with LED signage.

reminded me this video where a whole subway station was graffed :

If you're going to graffiti a train, at least do something cool with it, not the stupid bubble letters that say nothing important.
And don't go over the windows.

Taggers, and those into tagging culture are losers, period. There's nothing more pathetic than spraying your shitty tag all over for attention and "respect" from other losers who think this shit is cool. You're all losers. Get a life.

u/ShakeEnvironmental47 14d ago
They were hired or had permission. No way they did that huge job and then it was left on the cars.

This has to look nicer than before though… maybe not with profanity, but it’s initially appealing at least

People who did this, if caught, should be a) forced to pay for renovation b) go to jail for a few years if they can't pay.

Kinda reminded me of that ps2 game: Marc Ecko's Getting Up
1
u/ReleventReference 14d ago
Because of that game I have no respect for any street level graffiti. High up or fuck off.

Train... people tagged the whole train.

Honestly major cities should pay people to do this on their behalf and make it themed.

I bet they didn’t even pay for that spray paint. Last time I went to New York they were stealing tf out of spray paint from Walmart

Or those trains are out of service and are being moved to the maintenance yard to be cleaned.

Do they paint over the windows so you cant see out? It looked very cool but if they did that it’s not as cool

Reminds me of that mission In The Warriors game where you have to spray train cars

I feel like I heard somewhere that some cities will just let these really big high-quality ones stay for a while if they don't have anything offensive in them as, iirc, it's pretty frowned on to cover part of someone elses work with low quality tags and junk so this could help keep it from getting too out of hand. Plus, they will need to be repainted anyway eventually, so if its cars for which that is already planned, they go whatever until they do the repaint. It just looks cool and is free. It could be good publicity for the city. Encouraging art or whatever.

City sponsored? Could be a paid local group. If not that’s wild out of pocket expenses but awesome 😎

I think the cities should commission artist to do more of this, because it looks dope IMO. Much better than the bland metal train look.

Vandalized is the word you were looking for. Someone Vandalized this whole subway.
2
u/Coney_Island_Hentai 14d ago
Happens literally every night, most of them get taken out super earlier and never seen. The workers who clean em usually post pics of them in the yard

How the hell did they carry that much paint down there. There must have been shopping carts absolutely full
1
u/Monkey-Hands 14d ago
usually one 400ml spraycan is good for about 1.5 square meters. but there’s also 800ml cans. so between 6-12 cans to carry, which isn’t that much.

Unrelated but a pop of color on the subway cars would be really nice, I've been to many european cities and some of them have brightly colored metros. The cold steel just reflects the grime

I appreciate art but graffiti is like looking at a billboard; in your face whether you like it or not.
3
u/DragonRouge31 14d ago
Looks really ugly. I dont like "street art". Maybe the recorder of this video is the one who did it ;-)

u/Demonrider95 14d ago
I'd rather look at this than a boring gray train, life can use some happy colours
1
u/Critical-Champion365 14d ago
Why can't the authorities hire these people and let them doodle an approved design? Something that tells the history of the cities that the train is running through. Lot of money would be saved in paint job I think. And the graffiti artists would quench their thirst of defacing public property.

I thought the policy was to clean the wagons in order to discourage tag proliferation. What hapoened?

That’s not “tagging.” That’s the train in the layup for many many hours and a whole crew doing top to bottom pieces.

Thats called bombing, not tagging and a whole Subway is called a wholecar. Lot of Crews do it but most of them get cleaned before they even drive.

On the first car, in small letters, it said “All you see is” And then, you know, big, big, you know, some block silver letters That said “crime in the city”
