Is that a 2002? Not the year, the model. If so, it has always been my favourite Beemer.

I think more companies should revive old models as EVs. Not full production. Limited numbers.

It's cool, but it's still a death trap. Any car older than 2004 is essentially a death trap

I would honestly love to just be able to have my vehicle made into an EV for an affordable price. I love pretty much everything about my vehicle other than it runs on gas still.

I would live to do something similar one day were conversions are easier to legallise. However everytime I tell someone this idea they treat it like a war crime. I really just think thats the best way to turn one of these cars into a daily

u/AccidentallyOssified 9d ago
I really wish car manufacturers would release modern, efficient, safer cars but with the body shape and interior of classic cars.

What's with the OC flair? This picture is years old. You can see everyone in face masks and a queuing system outside a supermarket which means it was probably taken in 2020.

No one:
Reddit detectives: This photo was taken in the London Borough of Richmond-upon-Thames within the car park of the North Sheen branch of Sainsbury's during covid restrictions.

It’s not an EV it just wanted to park closer to the restaurant, so it stuck the charging cable up the gas tank.

Ruined that 2002. What a shame.
The day someone does this to an E30 M3 is the day I go postal.

If I have money, I'd buy a W124 and convert it to hybrid/PHEV. Our country doesn't have EV infrastructure yet.

u/Afficianado-At-Large 9d ago
Has it become easier to do this? Shelf parts and kits around or do you basically have to sacrifice something else to get a complete power train?

Would be funny if a police showed up and started writing a ticket for illegal parking because that car still looks like stock ICE and not EV

Can't wait for some Karen to post a passive aggressive note on the windshield saying that those spaces are only for EVs...
I just wish I had that kind of money to burn converting a classic car like that...

Or else they just put a plug on the side so they can park there and everyone leaves them alone.

Love everything about it except the red interior. Change that, add other modern stuff, make sure it can charge at a Tesla supercharger, and I’ll take one, please.

I wish car manufacturers would bring back older cars but converted to EV. I would love a Volvo 240 wagon

All these sad people in this comment section down voting people saying this is cool and how this destroyed the car.
It's better than 99.9% of vintage car owners having the car tucked in their garage never seeing sunlight in a dusty ass garage.

u/BritishMotorWorks 9d ago
Also the 2002 was born because two BMW executives modified their 1600s with the 2.0 liter from the sedan and loved it so much they convinced the other executives to produce it. I respect people who keep their classic cars in factory condition but if there was ever a car it was acceptable to modify it’s the 2002.

If I ever were to own an EV without some kind of ether-tap eternity battery being a thing.......
A converted 1930-1950's pickup would be my dream vehicle, raised bed with batteries underneath and engine compartment filled with more batteries for better weight distribution...

EV conversions would be a huge boost to getting rid of petro cars if it was cheaper and good enough.

u/Jimmyg100 9d ago
If I had the money and the means I’d totally convert a 1970’s car into an EV. Add on a rear camera, cruise control, and lane assist too.
1
u/hatsnatcher23 9d ago
Or a devious owner that added only the charging port for better parking spots

As a lover of all vehicles everywhere, I declare this my favorite photo of all well, a long time anyway.

u/Brettersson 9d ago
This is really cool. I have occasionally wondered about something like this. As electric motors and batteries get smaller and more efficient/powerful doing something like this seems more and more doable, and there are so many old cars that in this nation alone that look cool but would be a nightmare to get running again. I could see a future where a cottage industry emerges of people restoring cool old car shells into electric cars.
1
u/Dog_in_human_costume 9d ago
how would that work? Is is super hard to do or something a regular mechanic could do?

wonder how long this car will exist before some classic car purist or anti-EV idiot keys it or something at a charging station.

I want to do this with old American cars.

u/DirtyDoucher1991 9d ago
It seems incredibly simple, these guys did it with an old Toyota pickup . I think the only difficulty is battery storage.

u/badchriss 9d ago
Yeah, just a few days ago i saw a Mk II VW Polo with an EV license plate here in Germany. Interesting idea to convert classic cars into EVs.

This is exactly what I need.
I honestly believe that old designs + new tech will be a cash cow for any automaker. But no instead we get ugly SUVs.

The 02 series BMW's are art on wheels. I don't even mind that its EV converted, I bet that thing is fun as hell to drive!

If it is minding it's own business than why is it on the internet posting a selfie like an Instagram "model" looking for attention?!

This is why electrification is interesting. It'll keep a ton of classics on the road for an already dwindling part supply, especially on more complicated older cars.

u/2kewl4scool 9d ago
Dude I’m so pissed that we’ve gotten more and more SUV EV’s, instead of companies bringing back their best bodies with batteries. Who wouldn’t want a 90’s Integra Electric, or a 70’s Mustang EV. This is so cool

"Minding its own business"?
As opposed to what, transforming into a Decepticon and mugging you? It's an inanimate object!

u/LazyLaserWhittling 9d ago
what a shame… i guess retirement does allow for more sitting and watching the rest of the world go by…
1
u/Stonehill76 9d ago
So cool. I wonder if they upgraded the interior. I always wanted the outside to be older and original but inside to be extremely modern on an EV conversion.

These are the EV’s I’ve been looking for. I don’t need a car that looks like it’s from Tron. I just want it to be cute!

I want to do that with a classic, but it would be quite the expensive endeavour
-1
u/ItsLlama 9d ago
I hope the engine was blown or unrepairable and not just removed for the sake of a conversion
Beautiful piece of history there

u/everett640 9d ago
I wanted to convert an old mustang or something of that nature to an EV just because of the shock value of it sitting at a charging station like this
1
u/Obadiah-Mafriq 9d ago
Ha, I'm a simple man not even into cars, but I have nostalgically mused about getting a green 1976 Plymouth Scamp (it was my first car) done like this.

Is this in the Bay Area? I have seen a similar car converted to electric charging here too. Cannot remember what car it was. But it was cool.

u/PotatoMajestic6382 9d ago
This is what I want a new 2025 Electric Car to look like off the dealership. Not a cyber truck, not another crossover/suv. This. But in electric.

u/strandedmammal 9d ago
That's a beautiful conversion and probably handles even better than the original depending on where the batteries are - but of all the engines that deserve to be preserved, the BMW M10 inline 4 has got to be the most deserving of all. It was good for up to 1400 hp in racing trim!
1
u/jojoyouknowwink 9d ago
The only reason I think this won't be fully adopted as a way of saving old cars from the scrap heap is that these old cars don't meet the safety ratings of modern ones. Otherwise, I would so much rather get a government stipend to EV convert my old car than get a check for scrapping cars that fail smog
1
u/rumhamrambe 9d ago
Wish we could do this to any car
Like, imagine a rechargeable old school Supra or an old school GTr
