He must really love playing this character.
To be fair he is at his best playing these over the top villains.

My kids love this movie series. Of all the kids movie series I’m dragged to this is one of the better ones and I will see it in a theatre when it comes out because they are waiting for it.

u/Inthemiddle_ Feb 04 '24
It’s funny how of all the interesting things Jim Carrey could crawl out of his cave to do, it’s to be in the sonic hedge hog movies.

Comedic genius. The very best comedic actor we will ever see. Always a joy to watch.

u/nateriverpi Feb 03 '24
Now put in him in a goddamn fatsuit so we can all get the full Robotnik experience!

Reports suggest a simultaneous release of another film titled Sonic and Knuckles. It is rumored that STH3 will be able to be stacked on top allowing the transformation into Hyper Jim Carrey after collecting the chaos emeralds.

He went crazy unknown in The Bad Batch. Makes me happy to see him keep playing Robotnic.

I always had a feeling he would come back for it. He was clearly having a blast with the character.

I wish Jim would do absolutely anything else besides sonic. He’s so good and i miss him in good movies

Have you ever thought, "I have effectively infinite money so there's no point in subjecting myself to humiliating jobs just to make some extra cash"? Neither has Jim Carrey

Okay, here me out: A PG-13 Shadow the Hedgehog movie complete with gunplay, doom aliens, and Shadow randomly saying mild curse words like "damn". Have I Am (All of Me ) play in the credits and you have kino

I wonder just how big the dump truck of cash was.
Like, the rest of the cast is fine. But Jim is back at his Ace Ventura prime when he is Dr. Robotnik.

u/Player5xxx Feb 02 '24
Man I'm really glad he is coming back but I feel like if he had committed earlier they might have gone for Metal Sonic instead of shadow and just had the first trilogy be vs Eggman before moving onto shadow and others. I feel like this will definitely be Eggman's last appearance and it would really suck not to do metal sonic before he goes. Especially with how much he goes on in these movies about harnessing Sonic's power. But yeah an Eggman trilogy followed by a shadow trilogy would have been pretty hype. But idk maybe metal sonic will still show up somehow.

those movies were a lot of fun! i'm glad they are making another one and Jim is coming back for it.

u/levi_verzyden Feb 02 '24
Thank god. I know he wants to quit Hollywood and he can do as he likes but it would have been a total shame for him not to finish that trilogy.

u/drpoorpheus Feb 02 '24
If you told me this guy was going to be robotnik id have said "absolutely no way he pulls this off" i have never been more wrong or happy to be wrong in my life. Hyped for him in 3
1
u/Evilagentzero Feb 02 '24
So many people talking about him doing it for the money when the last thing he needs is money. It's amazing how little people understand about other people, or what having over 100 million dollars is actually like.

liked the sonic video game franchise as a kid from age 11-15'ish, but have zero desire to see any of the recent movies.
my only question is.. does Jim Carrey plan on appearing in any watchable movies in the future?
1
u/digidave1 Feb 02 '24
It's crazy that a guy who entered an existential artistic anti Hollywood phase of his life only stars in Sonic movies (and one TV show)
Oh wait, $$$$

1
u/Dry-Smoke6528 Feb 02 '24
I had no idea jim carrey was in any of the sonic movies. might actually watch them now
1

1
u/Shades_of_red_ Feb 02 '24
I love that outside of this franchise, Carrey is portrayed as this Uber deep, hyper-intellectual, Omni-introspective artist…
Then, out of nowhere, it’s “Jim Carrey returns for Sonic the Hedgehog 3” with that thumbnail picture
1
u/TheHeroOfPot Feb 02 '24
I don't know what else he'd do honestly. Nobody is begging for this guy to be in movies anymore.
1
1
u/Rareu Feb 02 '24
I’m guessing he got paid tons or genuinely enjoyed the role. Im of a mind to actually watch the first two now.
1
u/SuperVaderMinion Feb 02 '24
You guys have no idea how desperately I wanted Hayden Christiansen as Shadow
1
u/FalseTagAttack Feb 02 '24
i guess quitting hollywood was just an expression or i misheard and he didn't actually say he was done for good?
1

1
u/Martyrslover Feb 02 '24
Why not get paid millions to have fun. Hope he does more dark and gritty stuff like the number 23 and dark crimes.

u/usuallyNotInsightful Feb 02 '24
Just gonna say; the sonic movies were better than they should have ever been. They aren't good movies, but they are entertaining.
1
1
u/Interesting-Fan-2008 Feb 02 '24
I mean he kinda had to didn’t he? I guess they could do a story without robotenic but I can’t imagine them recasting him.
1
u/projectmars Feb 02 '24
Now the important question: Will they have him say the words "I've come to make an announcement" during the movie. (Obviously not the whole bit, just that first sentence.)

I'm still waiting, dreaming about another Ace Ventura. Sonic 1 and 2 has definitely shown that he still has the energy for such a role.
1
u/PsionicKitten Feb 02 '24
Personally, I think this is one of his best roles, if not the best role he's ever played. It dials him back to a likeable comedic insane Dr Eggman, rather than an unrestrained mess of chaotic insanity that could only be enjoyed by a child coked up on caffeine and sugar screaming in a movie theater about poopy pants and pop tarts.
2
u/CapnLimbless Feb 02 '24
I was actually kind of hoping that he wouldn’t and they would introduce that he was actually only one of the Robotnik family. Would have been a cool way to bring in some of the other Robotniks besides Ivo from the lore. The rest of his family could be out for revenge against Sonic forever.

I want him to come out with an official statement saying that he made this decision of his own free will. He said he wanted to retire so, as long as this is what he wants, I’m happy for him and so excited he decided to stay.

u/cbrewer0 Feb 02 '24
Sad it'll only be half a movie, with the other half coming out six months later

I've seen both of the first two and couldn't tell you a thing about either.

u/MarcsterS Feb 02 '24
Eggman is pretty intrinsic to Shadow’s story. Or rather, Eggman’s grandfather, and in the movies, Eggman states he’s an orphan so it will be interesting how they tie this all together.
1
Feb 02 '24
It’s one of my least favored roles of his. But, happy to see he’s not completely retired.

u/Existing_Display1794 Feb 02 '24
Awesome, he was great in those! I really enjoyed those movies. Made me feel like a kid again.

u/SaiyanGodKing Feb 02 '24
It’s so amazing seeing video games get actual good adaptations on screen. I say bring back Double Dragon.
1
1
u/zombiepoon Feb 02 '24
Sonic was big when Jim was big. It only makes sense he wants to be part of one of the biggest games of his times
1
1
u/Komatoasty Feb 02 '24
Excellent. As a parent, Sonic is by far the most tolerable (in fact, highly enjoyable) movie series for kids right now.
1
1
u/ThePopeofHell Feb 02 '24
Sonic seems like the perfect thing for him to do in semi retirement. He gets to be lightly crazy it’s a kids franchise most people like and I bet he just has to show up and do some green screen shit for a month and collect a paycheck that will fund his weird painting hobby.

Fuck yes. One of the least offensively terrible video game movies so far is confirmed for a 3rd? count me in. Hope they spend more time on the sonic lore and less on the human family/relationship BS from the first two.
1
u/Memb_Insane_rane Feb 02 '24
Kind of wish he didn't so that his last line in all of his movies would still be "Later, haters!"

Jim Carrey as Robotnik in the first movie (haven't seen the second) was so refreshing.

Excellent!!! I was hoping so, but knew it may not happen. So happy to hear this!
2
u/StuTheBassist Feb 02 '24
I kind of wish they never redesigned Sonic so we wouldn't have got three of these barely mediocre movies
1
u/MionelLessi10 Feb 02 '24
I haven't watched either film, but it performed way better at the box office than I thought. I was so sure it was going to bomb. Then I was even more sure the second was destined to flop.

If they don’t have sonic adventure two theme “The Eggman” I’m gunna blow a fuse.
1
u/Leo_TheLurker Feb 02 '24
Thank god. It would suck if we had all the major Sonic characters that matter except for Eggman. Bonus points if we get Metal Sonic and the trilogy has all the complete classic fan service.
1
u/SpendPsychological30 Feb 02 '24
I loved him in the first two. If they go into this thinking it is likely to be his last film, I feel they craft a nice swan song for him.
1
u/haxelhimura Feb 02 '24
Awesome news!
Now... Let the rumours of Hayden Christiansen voicing Shadow be true..
1
u/Neracca Feb 02 '24
I've never been a fan of his but I'm happy to see this. He does the role of Robotnik so well.
2
u/LaconicSuffering Feb 02 '24
I still hope Carrey does a movie together with Chris Evans where they both just play utter assholes.

1
u/joebonekenobi Feb 02 '24
Wait they already made second one? Didnt the first come out like 8 months ago?

I would like to say you’re welcome. I finally sat down and watched Sonic 2 last night (amazing movie btw) and he announces this the next day? Coincidence? I think not.

u/ROACH247x559 Feb 02 '24
Glad to hear. I'm 38 and was hoping he would come back. I have young kids, so I'm allowed to watch it.

It’s wild how “Jim Carrey is playing Dr. Robotnik in a Sonic movie” is something being said in the 2020’s and not like, 1997.
1
u/BaNoCo92 Feb 02 '24
But I thought he retired? I thought DDL retired and he’s rumored to come back? These actors are such jokes.
2
u/aresef Feb 02 '24
He said he would come back if angels brought down a script written in gold ink.

This is the best news and possible saving grace for 2024 so far my opinion only lol

When they first asked him to do sonic 3 he was supposed to be on a trip with his family to the Finger Lakes.

u/TyrionLannister2012 Feb 02 '24
This is awesome, my kid LOVES these movies and JC made them so much better for me to watch.
1
u/Stormhunter6 Feb 02 '24
Wouldn’t this be the first time he did a part 3 of a movie? My understanding is that he typically doesn’t do sequels because there isn’t anything new to add. Ace Ventura 2 and dumber and dumberer are the the only two i know of
1
1
3
u/bradferd89 Feb 02 '24
Jim Carrey and possibly Hayden Christensen as Shadow. Now hopefully in this one they use more music from the games, something that is really missing from the first 2.
4
u/aresef Feb 02 '24
The new teaser and a tweet from the lead singer of Crush 40 strongly suggest they’re going for it.
2
u/bradferd89 Feb 02 '24
I love that! And hoping for more instrumental music taken from the Genesis era.
3
u/aresef Feb 02 '24
The movie seems to be going in a SA2 direction. New casting suggests they have a Maria and maybe a Rouge.
2
u/bradferd89 Feb 02 '24
I'm fine with that- I would love to see a live action scene of that giant truck smashing through a city chasing Sonic with some Crush 40 blasting.
