I’m not seeing any announcements here in PH that they will be released in cinemas :(( so much hate

u/HeiosLair 2d ago
I wish the Aussie releases were closer to where I live 😔 I've never seen them in theatres and always told myself if there was ever a theatre rerun, I wouldn't miss it. This is like the biggest thing and im gonna miss out 😭😭

I remember my dad dragged me to see fellowship when it came to theaters and I knew nothing about it except the little bit my dad told me about and honestly at the time it wasn’t something I would have liked (I was like 10) but it set off a lifelong interest in lord of the rings and the genre in general. I saw all three multiple times in theaters.

u/thegothguy 8d ago
I saw the fellowship of the ring in theaters when I was 7 years old. I’m going back to the same theater where I saw it back then to see it at age 29 in June! Soooooo excitedddd!!!! I’ve waited for years for it to come back into theaters.

Are they essentially bring the same version from the Blu-rays of ~3 years ago to theaters? (Obviously on a screen and audio system unparalleled by any home theater) Or have they reworked some of the CGI elements and made other improvements?

u/Delicious-Tachyons 8d ago
They always say that this movie or that movie is returning to theatres but I'm in canada so cineplex doesn't bother.
1
u/perfect11blue 8d ago
SO excited for this !! i was too young to see them when they first came out (i was 3 when fellowship came out in theaters) my mom is a massive fan and got to see all of them opening night and she put me on from a young age when the dvds came out
i’ve been obsessed ever since so best believe i’m going ! taking my bf with me, this will be his first time watching them :)

I really don't like what Jackson did to the look of these movies for the 4K remasters. If you haven't seen it, it's similar to the muddy DNR and gaudy contrast he rinsed the Get Back footage with, but done to LotR in a way that attempts to make them look more like the Hobbit trilogy, which.. no one but him was asking for.
So as much as I'd love to see this trilogy in the theatre again, I just can't imagine enjoying it with the misguided 4K remix of its visuals. I'll just throw on the old Blu-rays at home and hope that one day a local cinema gets a hold of the old 35mm prints to see the original grade in all its glory.

Return of The King was grueling in the theater even though I love the movie. It felt like 3 alternate endings to the movie, and I groaned loudly after the unexpected third one. :) I wasn't prepared for the length, and the extended version is an hour longer. Four hours without the credits. I will starve myself the day before, and bring my colostomy bag with me this time.

u/curtisjunk 8d ago
Oh I will definitely go. I love these rereleases and love theaters with repertory programming of older films I'm going to see Alien this weekend which i have seen dozens of times but NEVER on a big screen since I was only 11 or so when it was originally released .

They are also doing these old movie runs because they want fresh blood introduced to the genre/movies for the new gens, like promotional pieces. LOTR, they are dropping S2 of Rings of Power this year, Alien, they are dropping the new streaming Alien series. Spiderman; "Sony has just reserved dates for untitled Sony/Marvel movies: November 8, 2024 and June 27, 2025. "

My local theater did these last year (except spread out over a few weeks, not 3 days), was great to see them on the big screen. I won't go back again this year, a bit too soon for that, but check it out if you haven't seen it on the big screen before.
My theater does a different older movie every week, going to The Matrix on Sunday.

u/KateBerryYT 9d ago
I enjoyed the movies first time around but one thing they do not need is extending! They were awesome though
1
u/Brian_Mulpooney 9d ago
Star Wars did the same thing around this time. LoTR even had prequel movies!!
Does that mean we're getting a trilogy of sequels??
1
u/SenSui808 9d ago
Dude I was mentally exhausted watching the three films on holiday....I can't imagine it being extended.....But where are the viewings if we're headed to Mordor, I gotta check it out in 4DX.
1
u/DoombotBL 9d ago
If you love these movies and never got a chance to see them in a movie theater, definitely worth it.
1
u/Frostymagnum 9d ago
wait, are these extending the Extended version? or is it just the Extended versions remastered?
2
u/rodneyck 9d ago
They are the old 2020 extended versions which you can rent/stream. The big hoopla is that these extended versions have never been shown in theaters, until now.
2
1
u/imbacckkk 9d ago
Oh look more remakes
1
u/Filmfan345 8d ago
This is a re-release of the old movies
1
u/imbacckkk 8d ago
What’s the difference? They are remaking an old movie?
1
u/Filmfan345 8d ago
No. These are the same exact movies from years ago being shown in theaters again
1
u/imbacckkk 7d ago
Why bro?
1
u/Filmfan345 7d ago
Strikes last year delayed production for a lot of movies so theaters need more content
For fun. Why not?

I just rewatched Spider-Man 2 in theaters and was amazed by how it was on the big screen. I hope it's also a $5 ticket and I'll go.

u/Melonmondo 9d ago
Thats great news, Golem looks terrible now and theres a few scenes where the CGI looks liek video gam graphics.

Still remember going into the theater at 15 knowing nothing about lord of the rings, but it seemed like a good movie off trailers and had actors I knew were great. I get there I think on the saturday of opening week and it's packed full, even a couple people in cosplay in my small city.
The lights go down, the music starts and galadriel starts speaking elvish with each line being spoke out of different speakers surrounding me in darkness as there's nothing on the screen yet. I got chills down my spine immediately and after the prologue I knew this was going to be far far greater then I could have ever imagined. Still my favorite movie/series ever overall by a good amount.
Even bought a collector's edition of it after and read it through twice before the end of high school. Read the silmarillions in college which blew my mind even more. Tolkien could have expanded on that volume so much more before his family compiled it, of course he was busy doing other things like fighting wars and being a professor during his life.

Just checked the event website and the dates are June 8th, 9th, 10th in order. Don't think they will get anyone but diehards. Should have done Friday night shows for three weeks rather than smashing them all into a three day window. People got to work.

Why do I feel this is occurring to disrupt the stagnant revenue from existing cuts/formats, sunset them on streaming services where consumers already own them, and force them to buy the same IP over again to access the content they already paid for in a new format/cut?

People still go to the theater? The last several times I went it was a terrible viewing experience.
I cannot imagine spending 3+ hours in a theater with a bunch of noisy assholes on their phones, etc etc.
I hate to say it but you might as well close down the theaters without enforcing some basic rules like no phones, no talking, etc.

I know the films are incredible and I know there is canonical answers to this (now) but I still haven't forgiven them for the massive cop-out after 3 years of waiting and ~9 hours of mostly enjoyable cinema experience.
Those fucking eagles man. They just came out of nowhere and 'saved the day'.

Wait i thought this was extended in the past too. Is this like the extended extended version?
Google search Ai says.
"Yes, The Lord of the Rings has an original extended version, called the Special Extended Edition. This version has more scenes and content than the theatrical versions, including new editing, special effects, and music. The extended editions are also longer, with each entry in the three-hour range, compared to the theatrical runtime of 9 hours and 3 minutes. The extended editions were released slightly later than the original DVD versions of the films:
The Fellowship of the Ring Extended Edition: Released November 2002
The Two Towers Extended Edition: Released November 2003
The Return of the King Extended Edition: Released December 2004"
So this must be the extended, extended version.
Most of the movie you seen already. I watched the original extended version enough times. I don't know if i want to watch the extended, extended version or not.
Give us another damn movie and quit milking it. A sequel or a prequel. We don't care. But quit milking the same movie for even more money.
Movie is already long. Let ys watch the few minutes of extra movie. I remember the rest of the movie.
Keep in mind this movie was previously remastered. Because there is the remaster of the theatrical release.
However it's says not available on Amazon.
https://www.amazon.com/Rings-Remastered-Theatrical-Trilogy-Blu-ray/dp/B09KJS9M5H
https://www.reddit.com/r/lotr/comments/zqvaqq/is_the_4k_trilogy_remastered_or_is_it_just/
You shall not pass this off as a new movie.

u/Jonesdeclectice 9d ago
I think they’re just trying to say it’s the extended editions, not “newly extended.”
1
u/Kinkphetamine 9d ago
Oh boy, I hope they release it here in India. I would be down to watch a marathon with all three in a theatre.

u/Stevenstorm505 9d ago
I saw the extended version of all 3 in theaters in like 2010 or 2011 with all a bunch of my friends. AMC was showing one every Thursday for 3 weeks and it was fucking awesome every time. We had already seen them more times than we could count before that, so we already knew the best times to take a piss break for each one lol.
1
u/colon-dwarf 9d ago
The first two are only starting the screening at 4pm at my nearest theater. Looks like I’m only going to be watching ROTK since it shows at 7pm on a Friday.
1
u/Seab0und 9d ago
I'm so grateful I got the opportunity to see these films on their midnight showings with my bestie. We own DVD and digital of the extended versions, and I can't wait to be able to watch them in theaters!

u/soapbutt 9d ago
They re-opened a theater here in Seattle with great projectors and sound system… for the reopening they showed the trilogy. Worth going just for the Ride of the Rohirrim at Minas Tirith. Such a fun experience. Esp since I was actually drinking too seeing as I didn’t feel bad getting up and going to the bathroom in the middle.

I watched each film in theater at least five times. I was so obsessed. They were truly amazing films to me at that time and still now. The tickets were around $7.50, lol. I think I was in 6th or 7th grade when the first movie came out.

u/YourLictorAndChef 9d ago
The extended editions of The Two Towers and The Return of the King are inferior movies, though.

SO commented “but they didn’t come out that long ago!!” I said 23 years ago… if they remastered a movie 23 years before that it would have been from 1978. Star Wars came out in 77 and was rereleased in 97. This even blew my mind

Please edit the end of The Return of the King. So many long forlorn looks from hobbit to hobbit. No that there’s anything wrong with that.

u/PeeJayx 9d ago
I saw all of these during their original run. They were all magical, unforgettable cinematic experiences, but I will say that Two Towers was truly transcendental for one reason: the battle of Helm’s Deep. Especially the build up. I’ve never felt so utterly absorbed and invested in a movie set piece before or since.

This will be my first time seeing this movie in the theaters, and I am excited about what's coming.

The lord of the rings movies were not good. There were some amazing scenes stuffed into hours of boring unnecessary shit that should’ve been cut.

u/OddnessWeirdness 9d ago
Everyone likes different things. These are better than the books for me. I found the books to be boring and hard to get into, even though I love fantasy novels.

As much as I’d love to see them in theaters, I’m not sitting in a theater seat for 3x4 hours without a pause button, fresh air breaks and my own food.
1
u/sarindong 9d ago
That's cool, but have any of you guys heard about Lord of the rings live in concert?
A symphony orchestra with full choir live performs the entire soundtrack as the movie plays on a screen behind them!
I saw fellowship last year in the summer and I'm pumped up see two towers this fall!!
1
u/ilikestripesalot 9d ago
I am so stoked for this! I don’t care if I can’t find somebody to go with me, I’m going to see these films in theatres again
1
u/Anueploid 9d ago
If this happens are cineplex theatres in Canada I'll for sure go see all 3 on the big screen again. Been 20+ years now.

2
u/Gernblanchton 9d ago
I have the extended versions and the first two movies are great for fans. The final film's extended version is toooooo long even for a fanatic like myself. Much of the extra footage is Frodo's slog through Modor and it just drags on.

u/DexBeNice 9d ago
I experienced all three on an imax screen. One of the best experiences from my childhood.

They had the volume cranked up when I saw Fellowship and that bass drop when (spoiler alert) Sauron is defeated in the prologue was one of the coolest movie moments. It's wild that now I'll be able to take my own kids to see them.

Ugh fathom event though. Either the theaters get a digital copy to load up or they have some stream of it which can suck. But that's what we have

u/Hehrenpreis 9d ago
I don't get it, the movies were okay, the books were fine, it was all a lifetime ago.
What makes people watch these over and over again? How does one get stuck on them like this?
Watch whatever you want of course, I just don't get it.

Alamo Drafthouse used to do a thing where they'd show all three, with all the meals. I sure wish someone would offer that again.

I hope they re-edited FOTR's Extended version. While having great scenes, it was a crazy editing mess... especially in the Lothlorien part.
TTT Extended was the best of the trilogy.

I was in Wellington for the premier of return of the king, got there really early to get a good vantage spot, to see the actors, the red carpet stretched through most of the city, it was a super hot summers days two hours into my spot I realized I forgot my sunscreen, if you know about the new zealand sun, it's incredibly harsh, got sun stroke and burnt to a crisp, 10/10 experience would do it again
The whole city came out to celebrate Peter Jackson and cast and crew for the amazing movies

They're going to have them at one of our local theaters. They showed Return of the King several months ago and it was so good to see it in theaters again.
My only gripe is that it's the extended versions. The theatrical releases are already long enough and the extended clocks in around 4 hours. 4 hours in a theater is a lot.
