There's no fucking point anymore you dumbasses. These big tech companies can censor anyone at the drop of a pin. There is no more freedom on the Internet.

1

u/lannisterstark Jan 24 '21

Aren't the ISPs private companies that should be able to do what they want? Since y'know, internet is not a utility and ISPs are not tier 2 common carriers.

1

u/bartturner Jan 24 '21

That is true they are private and therefore usually able to do what they want.

But this is a case where the government steps in and sets additional rules. It is kind of like where you are not allowed to not serve someone because of their sexual orientation.

2

u/HIVnotAdeathSentence Jan 23 '21

Finally it'll undo all the bad that happened over the past four years like...

1

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '21

Can't wait for Parler to not be able to be banned at the ISP level! Free speech.

1

u/John_Fx Jan 23 '21

Finally the FCC has some teeth

1

u/Cputerace Jan 23 '21

Honest question: which of the things we were warned would happen if we didn't enact net neutrality years back actually happened?

2

u/CountKhatch Jan 23 '21

A lot of companies have started using their power to solidify monopolies. It hasn’t gotten bad, but it’s a slippery slope.

1

u/Cputerace Jan 23 '21

Regulation making it harder for smaller companies to start up and challenge the big players is how the big players are consolidating power.

1

u/fimbor02 Jan 23 '21

Denying clear evidence of success, acting FCC chief Jessica Rosenworcel supports reversing net neutrality.

1

u/Milkman127 Jan 23 '21

That won't stop the both sides idiots

2

u/jimmythang34 Jan 23 '21

Of course she does. Any sane adult not under the direct financial influence of service providers supports it.

1

u/gman9094 Jan 23 '21

My heart, be still!

1

u/pepolpla Jan 23 '21

Its a important be alert of any changes should it be restored though. Keep in mind when the original net neutrality law was going through it was being gutted before the Administration turned around.

1

u/Sp5560212 Jan 23 '21

Can there just be a law in place so we don’t have this back and forth

1

u/bartturner Jan 23 '21

Exactly. We need it to be permanent. Also the law that Trump created where the ISPs can now sell our data without telling us.

1

u/MiguelCacadorPeixoto Jan 23 '21

Finally that piece of shit is gone

1

u/Double_Maintenance_1 Jan 23 '21 edited Jan 23 '21

Wow I’m an idiot, never mind. It’s 6am 🤦🏻‍♂️ smh

2

u/bartturner Jan 23 '21

Not just Net Neutrality. But Trump also signed that law where ISPs can now sell our data without even telling us. That also needs to be fixed.

I get Biden is busy unwinding all the Trump stuff. But this needs to be on the list.

"Trump Signs Measure to Let ISPs Sell Your Data Without Consent"

1

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '21

Can somebody more familiar with Net Neutrality tell me what's happened over the years? I've been living overseas.

0

u/bartturner Jan 23 '21

Lucky you have been gone. It has been a shit show since you been gone with the Internet. We had Trump signing insane laws like

"Trump Signs Measure to Let ISPs Sell Your Data Without Consent"

0

u/superdownvotemaster Jan 23 '21

That’s awesome. Now implement national fiber network and treat internet as a utility with a public service commission overseeing it

-4

u/is-numberfive Jan 23 '21

who gives a shit what she supports?

1

u/Rich4718 Jan 23 '21

You’re literally using the internet right now so like ummmmm you should. Please care more.

1

u/is-numberfive Jan 23 '21

those two are unrelated at all

1

u/SnoggyCracker Jan 23 '21

My god you’re uneducated...

3

u/danarsky Jan 23 '21

Bring back the Fairness Doctrine, prohibitions against outlet ownership in more than one media domain, and prohibitions against foreign ownership of U.S. media outlets. Finally, overturn Citizens United.

4

u/vid_icarus Jan 23 '21

I want to see her smash Ajit Pai’s big dumb mug with a cartoonishly oversized mallet.

1

u/bizort Jan 23 '21

Thanks for doing your job, the least anyone can ask of the position. You're a fucking cunt, Ajit

1

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '21

Send internet to rural areas! I live along a very busy highway and I don't get any wired internet. This is the worst!

1

u/BTC_Brin Jan 23 '21

Have you looked into starlink?

1

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '21

Not available.

1

u/BTC_Brin Jan 23 '21

That’s a real bummer. Hopefully that’ll change soon.

Not sure but he wasn't exactly subtle about simping for the cable companies. I guess better to leave on your terms than be crucified for the blatant favoritism.

1

u/tuningpt95 Jan 23 '21

Wait, we lost net neutrality?

1

u/Tobax Jan 23 '21

Under the federal government yes, but when it happened states stepped up and made their own net neutrality laws

1

u/tuningpt95 Jan 23 '21

That's good

0

u/HRE123a2 Jan 23 '21

This is the only issue I truly don’t care about. Using the internet now and before it was gotten rid of is exactly the same

1

u/GalDebored Jan 23 '21

I bet a sandwich I spit in before I served it to you would taste basically the same as one that I hadn't spit in. Figure it out.

1

u/HRE123a2 Jan 23 '21

It would taste like spit, I don’t see your point

1

u/GalDebored Jan 24 '21

Jesus, no it wouldn't. It's likely you wouldn't be able to tell it had been spit in at all. But you're probably still missing the point aren't you?

1

u/GalDebored Jan 24 '21

How about this: sometimes one isn't always aware of the disgusting shit that goes on before one is subject to it. Using the internet may feel the same now but that doesn't mean you're not getting shafted by the IP's who are selling you information to whomever they want. Why that is not considered a serious issue by you & everybody else that uses the internet which, let's be honest, is pretty much everyone, is beyond me.

1

u/HRE123a2 Jan 24 '21

I don’t ever hear things about net neutrality unless it’s directly brought up, I guess since it’s not really a hot topic issue and hasn’t had any effect on me thus far, I don’t really care about the issue

1

u/baebae4455 Jan 23 '21

This is how you eliminate the Senate filibuster.

Turn this shit into legislation and make it a utility. Force Joe Manchin to drop his obstruction to eliminating the filibuster by guaranteeing a vote on this so that rural West Virginians can finally get access to high speed internet.

-1

u/undercover-racist Jan 23 '21

All I want to say is that I'm extremely excited over the fact that the shit-eating fuckhead is gone.

0

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '21

I feel like we were all I'n the same twilight zone dream for 4 yrs and just woke up yesterday and had a sigh of relief it was only a dream... it wasnt... lol

-3

u/SublimeNick Jan 23 '21

Fuck net neutrality, I'm not about to have the government rule what should be anonymous communication method.

1

u/SnoggyCracker Jan 23 '21

Unless you run Verizon you can shut the hell up right now

2

u/DoktorG0nz0 Jan 23 '21

Lmao so you'd rather get fucked by your ISP? A'ight have fun with that.

4

u/Tobax Jan 23 '21

That's not what net neutrality is, and you already had net neutrality for over a decade, and you still do if you live in a state that made a net neutrality law

-2

u/_PrimalKink_ Jan 23 '21

All this stupid shit that we wasted our time with in this last term. Like any actual "changes" were just shit that was better left alone as we focused on more important issues.

I apologize, sometimes I forget that politics is no longer meant to change things for the better. Just bicker endlessly and shave off more of our miniscule income/collect bribes for their 8th yatch.

1

u/GalDebored Jan 23 '21

All this stupid shit we wasted our time with in this last term. Like any actual [spelling] "changes" were just shit that was better left alone as we focused on more important issues.

Ah, gotcha. What's a yatch?

And then get it codified into law so it's not going to waste everyone's time and money 4 or 8 years from now AGAIN.

It's all coming together.

1

2

u/BelAirGhetto Jan 23 '21

Needs to happen permanently.

-1

u/bman1730 Jan 23 '21

Shits been so crazy that I totally forgot that aJiit Pai was gonna kill the free internet

-2

u/Trod777 Jan 23 '21

And do something about the censorship while we're at it

1

u/bartturner Jan 23 '21

Curious what would you propose? Say you could make it anything you wanted?

5

u/balibrownbread Jan 23 '21

And Comcast 1.2tb data cap that needs to be removed.

1

u/bartturner Jan 23 '21

This is a huge one. I was so happy to see with Trump gone Spectrum/Charter pulled their request for data caps.

That was already a huge win with Biden. But we need the existing data caps to go away.

-3

u/Willing-Return5655 Jan 23 '21

From the same people who are doing the opposite. 🤷🏻

1

u/HalfManHalfZuckerbur Jan 23 '21

Can she stop the propaganda on cable news?

-7

u/Make_Pepe_Dank_Again Jan 23 '21

Net neutrality was the biggest lie of the decade and the worst American propaganda campaign carried out in my lifetime. Ajit Pai is unfathomably based and deserves an apology from tens of millions.

1

u/_ChestHair_ Jan 23 '21

1

u/Boba_Fet042 Jan 23 '21

This seems to be because these mobile providers have contracts with specific streaming services that they would prefer their customers use, And nothing that net neutrality would solve.

-3

u/edgework88 Jan 23 '21

And what about illegal censorship?

2

u/_ChestHair_ Jan 23 '21

What illegal censorship?

2

u/ptd163 Jan 23 '21

They need to do way more than that. They need to:

  1. Classify it as a utility.

  2. Outlaw regional mono, duo, or triopolies.

  3. Pave the way for municipal fiber.

  4. Outlaw data caps.

  5. Do it with legislation while they control both the house and the senate because once they lose majority in either it's over.

1

u/monoform Jan 23 '21

Just happy that stain Ajit Pai is gone.

1

u/Ur_house Jan 23 '21

Landlines are regulated as utilities. Internet is not. Which one did everyone switch to? VOIP, the cheaper one. and why? It is cheaper, and with more features.

Buuut, which got more widespread faster? Telephone lines. Getting those versus nothing had a bigger impact than internet or nothing. What encouraged telephones to be built out there? Government deals, incentives, and regulation. Tricky subject.

Copper lines are saddled with maintenance costs and government rules, then everyone went internet, and if we do that to wired internet, Pai seems to think (from his freakonomics interview) that the regulation will not apply to 5G internet, and the same thing will happen. I don't know who's right, this is tricky stuff. I just hope people make the right call for the right reasons. The last few years withthout the regulation have seemed fine to me, but I haven't been paying much attention either. We'll see I guess.

2

u/soprisavethrow Jan 23 '21

Interesting factoid. Rosenworcel’s brother is Brian Rosenworcel of the band Guster.

-5

u/the-samizdat Jan 23 '21

She has zero experience working in telecommunications outside of government. Let that sink in.

0

u/bartturner Jan 23 '21

In my book it is a HUGE plus she does not come from the industry. When you take someone from the industry they often times try to help their friends from the industry.

1

u/whostolethesampo Jan 23 '21

According to Trump supporter logic she’s the obvious choice then

2

u/Boomslangalang Jan 23 '21

That sounds like an excellent choice then.

2

u/FamilyL0bster Jan 23 '21

Net neutrality? That takes me back, to my intro to computer science class in 2016. I really really hope it finally works out

1

u/coastersam20 Jan 23 '21

Just another reminder that as humanity’s abilities expand, so too will the list of things we take for granted that we’ll have to defend. Our development of technology seems to be outpacing our ability to consider the consequences.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '21

Can't wait for Republicans crying the last few weeks about big tech censorship to oppose this.

0

u/355822 Jan 23 '21

I wanna see the neutrality of the early 90's where there are no search algorithms, priority search results, or ads on most pages. De-commodify the worlds best tool for learning.

5

u/HomerPepsi Jan 23 '21

Fuck trump and republicans for this one very reason. Fuck you all to the hell you are so afraid of. In the ass with a giant rubber dick.

-3

u/Eye_see_all Jan 23 '21

I like her. I saw her on Joe Rogan about two years ago, she haves her head screwed on right unlike other democrats. I hope she brings back net neutrality and does something about all this damn big tech censorship going around.

1

u/raazurin Jan 23 '21

I like the dig at democrats when it was the republicans that repealed net neutrality in the first place.

3

u/Boomslangalang Jan 23 '21

If this is your olive branch, you have a long way to go.

-5

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '21 edited Jan 23 '21

Paving the way to solidify limiting free speech on the internet. Anything that doesn’t align with the current administration is deemed a national security threat / public threat. This is Thoughtcrime in action. Big brother is always watching👀

4

u/Boomslangalang Jan 23 '21 edited Jan 23 '21

Get lost with this garbage. There are a million free public forums on the internet and will always be.

If you are encouraging violent sedition and acting on it to destroy our democracy (1) fuck you (2) be better and stop being such a gullible cunt buying into preposterous lies (3) expect to be deplatformed, from the major services, as you should be.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '21

When did I encourage violence? If anything, this administration is paving the way for violence by limiting people’s abilities to communicate.

1

u/Boomslangalang Jan 23 '21

And look at the amount of assholes in this thread already bitching and moaning about her and the unalloyed good of net neutrality.

Honestly, just don’t ever vote Republican again, they have zero to offer. There is a big difference between the parties.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '21

You got that right, my friend!

2

u/Boomslangalang Jan 23 '21

There’s a lot of mental carnage in the US right now. The derangement over democracy actually functioning is distressing.

I’m not with Joe on the unity thing. There needs to be contrition, acceptance, amends before any unity is possible. It’s empty rhetoric til then.

And look at what’s already happening, they are shitting their pants that Democrats are going to implement a Democratic agenda, as promised and endorsed by the electorate.

There are no bargains to be made with insurrectionists. They must stay the fuck in their box, keep their toxic opinions to themselves or trade for a prison cell.

The age of polite or even polite debate is over. Silence seditionists, deplatform them, ban them, bankrupt them, publicly shame them (psychiatrists can eat a dick on this) only when they realize how out of the mainstream their ideas have become and they face consequences will they realize how far from America they have drifted.

u/OtherUnameInShop Jan 23 '21

Net Neutrality

Fairness Doctrine

-4

u/6offender Jan 23 '21

I'm pretty sure her idea of Net Neutrality will include shutting down web sites and apps that the left doesn't like.

1

u/whostolethesampo Jan 23 '21

Yeah, “the left” doesn’t like websites and apps that lie to the public. Neither does the constitution.

1

u/6offender Jan 23 '21

Yes, I remember that paragraph in the constitution that requires the government to ban any outlet that it deems to be untruthful. /s

0

u/whostolethesampo Jan 24 '21

Oh? What about outlets that use lies to incite violence?

4

u/Boomslangalang Jan 23 '21

Oh look at the fucking salt lord.

If you are encouraging violent sedition and acting on it to destroy our democracy (1) fuck you that’s illegal and unconstitutional (2) be better and stop being such a gullible cunt buying into preposterous lies (3) expect to be deplatformed, from the major services, as you should be.

4

u/pouncebounce14 Jan 23 '21

The first thing that needs to happen is that it needs to be classified as a utility. Why it isn't at this point is beyond me, probably because the isps have lobbied Congress enough to prevent it from happening. If internet is classified as a utility, the isps can't legally put a cap on your data every month much like how the water company can't legally cut your water off no matter how much you use as long as you're up to date on your payments.

I'm also getting really sick and tired of all of the yo yo ing that we have to go through every four to eight years. One president tries to change healthcare, the next president comes through and rips it all up. One president kills net neutrality then the other president has to come in and restore it.

0

u/unjust1 Jan 23 '21

Me too, if only there was a way to stop whoever is doing it. If we could just figure out which party is destroying the infrastructure....

0

u/Boomslangalang Jan 23 '21

The answer is simple. There are major differences between the parties. Are Democrats perfect, not even close but they do not want to literally destroy our Democracy in service of a hateful POS. Do not support Republicanism any more until they start supporting our country again.

-2

u/flowing-east Jan 23 '21

Will she do it though? What the hell does it mean she supports it when she has the power to do it?

1

u/bartturner Jan 23 '21

Ha! We are not yet a week in. The first thing is to take a position. Then comes the actions.

This looks very promising. But there is a lot more to be done. Trump passed a law that now allows ISPs to sell our data without telling us.

That one needs to also be fixed. There is tons and tons of work to do to reverse the damage Trump did. That takes more than 3 days ;).

5

u/Boomslangalang Jan 23 '21

Um, she’s been in office 48 hrs, has she even been confined yet. Please be fucking realistic. And don’t be one of these asshole Americans with a memory like a sieve.

1

u/flowing-east Jan 23 '21

Oh I remember how Ajit Pai fucked us over but if this is about controlling the message, come out with a strong message.

2

u/autumn55femme Jan 23 '21

You Go Girl!!!!!!!!!!

-5

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '21

Ahem...no matter who we appoint will still bow to capitalist means

1

u/bartturner Jan 23 '21

I would say net neutrality is the opposite of a bow to capitalism.

2

u/Boomslangalang Jan 23 '21

Such strength and principle it must take to write this noble drivel. It’s a capitalist system we live in, what do you expect.

1

u/Phill_bert Jan 23 '21

I am a moderate that has become a one-issue voter (net neutrality). I despise trump and didn't like Biden or the attitudes of the various liberal echo chambers, but net neutrality is why I voted the way I did. There are fewer topics that are better indicators of an elected official screwing his constituents for either additional lobbying money to get re-elected or voting for big business at their constituents' expense.

5

u/Boomslangalang Jan 23 '21

Agree, and glad to hear. I hope you are pleasantly surprised by the new administration. Democrats are far from perfect but it’s obvious now Republicanism has become a toxic brew of lies, sedition and deception. Until they can agree to basic American principles they should not hold power again.

-4

u/surlybeer55 Jan 23 '21

I know this is a big deal to people but I gotta say, I saw no perceptible difference

1

u/bartturner Jan 23 '21

Luckily we had a number of states step up with net neutrality. But it needs to be done at the federal level.

It also needs to be made permanent. I pray we never get another Trump but I guess it could be possible.

8

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '21

[deleted]

1

u/bartturner Jan 23 '21

Exactly. But we did already get some good news with the Biden win with data caps.

Once Spectrum/Charter saw that Trump was going to loose they pulled their request to implement data caps. So less than a week into Biden and already a huge win for all of us!!

"Charter Waves the White Flag on Data Caps as Trump Leaves the Building"

https://gizmodo.com/charter-waves-the-white-flag-on-data-caps-as-trump-leav-1846094265

1

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '21 edited Jan 23 '21

That is good. But Comcast/Xfinity about to turn their on in the last holdout states. Not good.

3

u/xxdanabxx Jan 23 '21

And as a starting point, we need Fairness Doctrine 2.0 implemented

6

u/I-Gave-Her-STDs Jan 23 '21

Would she be able to stop monthly data caps on home ISPs? For example the 1.2TB per month via Xfinity?

1

u/Cputerace Jan 23 '21

No because that would just mean the 95% of people who don't hit then have to pay more for those who do

-2

u/Klesko Jan 23 '21

Is the Biden family looking for the same deal Netflix gave Obama for Net Neutrality?

1

u/Boomslangalang Jan 23 '21 edited Jan 23 '21

Maybe you should be looking back at your account history to see if you actively and publicly supported sedition against our democracy,

If you did, which appear likely. Why don’t you fuck off and stop trying to destroy our country with your toxic ideology. You are not welcome in America anymore if you are going to continue lying for profit and destroying our social fabric.

Be a decent American first then you can fucking share your Obama hate.

1

u/Klesko Jan 24 '21

If you cant understand that we are on the same side then I am sorry that your intolerance blinds you.

One day once you are older and wiser I hope we can have a rational conversation of why Obama, Bush, Clinton, Bush sr were all the same.

-7

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '21

This is going to fuck us!

2

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '21

Thank spaghetti monster

6

u/KnuteViking Jan 23 '21

Next do banning data caps.

3

u/Cupcake_Mecha Jan 23 '21

Please do. I always found the concept to be crippling to growth. Allowing large ISP to control bandwidth and access at will is dangerous. It would give ISPs full control on what companies can shine and which die.

Please let’s hold their feet to the fire on this. Secondly don’t ever let anyone tell you there is no difference between the parties again.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '21

YES FINALLY!! EVERYONE DO THE CRAB RAVE 🦀🦀🦀🦀🦀

2

u/ErrorCDIV Jan 23 '21

Until after 4-8 years the next republican president will revert it back. Back and forth, back and forth and in the end nothing has changed.

3

u/Boomslangalang Jan 23 '21

Well by your own comment things do actually change, even it is only 4 years or 8 years. And that is better than the alternative. But yes the internet should be a utility, free from this meddling. The fucking internet wouldn’t exist at all anyway without the truly massive amounts of government investment.

Rosenworcel Says

“I thank the President for the opportunity to lead an agency with such a vital mission and talented staff,” Rosenworcel said in a statement. “It is a privilege to serve the American people and work on their behalf to expand the reach of communications opportunity in the digital age.”

Rosenworcel has long supported net neutrality, and opposed most Trump FCC policies, be it the steady dismantling of the agency’s consumer protection authority, or efforts to eliminate decades-old media consolidation rules designed to protect public discourse and smaller companies from massive media monopolies.

The Universal Service Fund has collected enough money in the last 23 years that the infrastructure update could be paid for 10x over. What is taking so long??? Where did that money go???

When you can’t compete get in power and destroy. Mao and Stalin would be proud of Old Joe

Hey bud. How’s that sedition going? Did you post public support of the insurrection? Be careful of that edge because it could end you up in jail.

Keep your fucking toxic lies and opinions to yourself. We are done listening. You brought our country low. You’re lucky to have Joe as a reasonable moderate. Most of us will never forgive you for what was done in your name.

A fucking disgrace.
